Rebels with a grudge and the anatomy of a damning smearBy Independent
The BBC's claim this week that $95m of aid to Ethiopia had in fact been spent on weapons was incendiary, threatening to undermine future aid efforts. But, says Paul Vallely, it does not stand up to scrutiny. |

Meles Zenwai & Human Rights AbusesBy Apee Ojulu
Introduction
I have been invited to present a paper on the violations of human rights in Ethiopia. I want to start with two quotes from two apolitical professionals. As Human Right Watch Africa Director, Peter Takirambudde watches Ethiopia closely. During a conference on Horn of Africa at the University of Minnesota Law School, Mr. Takirambudde told the audience that he has worked in both Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. He says, “In Zimbabwe at peak of violence there is more political freedom than in Ethiopia. Zimbabwean opposition politicians are free to say what they want but Ethiopian opposition politicians would end up in jail if they say the same things |

A Close Look at Ethiopia’s GambellaBy Choul Babur
I went on vacation to Gambella in September, 2007. There, most people appealed for investors and people with advanced education to return from Diaspora. It appears change was what they needed in pleading for help from the Diaspora. I was convinced by these pleads and returned home to contribute using my education and invest any wealth at my capacity. In the past, my brother and I built a miller shop which was burnt down in Pinyudo by Ethiopian Military Forces during the Anuak massacre of December, 2003. In 2008, I bought a boat and it provides transportation services from Pinyudo to Jor villages during winter seasons and it still utilizes. |

Struggles against land grabs in Gambella
Interview with Nyikaw Ochalla
Ethiopia is one of the main targets in the current global farmland grab. The government has stated publicly that it wants to provide 3 million hectares of farmland in the country to foreign investors and around 1 million hectares have apparently already been signed away. Much of the land that these investors have acquired is in the province of Gambella, a fertile area that is home to the Anuak Nation. The Anuak are indigenous people that have always lived in Gambella and who practice farming, pastoralism and hunting and gathering . |

Foreign agro firms scoop up Ethiopian farmlandBy Peter Heinlein, VOA
ADDIS ABABA - The Green Revolution that ended food shortages in parts of the world decades ago may be coming to East Africa, bringing the promise of bountiful harvests in a region more often associated with drought and famine. But from the Oromia region of Ethiopia, critics see the project as a neo-colonial land grab. |

Community and ConflictBy
Dr. Opiew Cham
Today, I would like you to think with me about the subject of Community and Conflict. These past months, I had the privilege of having some students at my class to discuss the challenges and realities of the multi-cultural community. After reflecting upon that discussion, I have come to the realization that creating a pluralistic world is the job of individual communities. However, there is a fundamental question that must be asked before we can begin to create a pluralistic community. Do we want to get along? |

Ethiopia’s investment policy Versus AnuaksEthiopia is one of the poorest nations in the world with bad record of human life catastrophe due to civil war, politics and recurring natural disasters which cause food shortage or poor economy management. Mostly Ethiopian leaders blame the existing economy problem on lack education, capital and technology to utilize the country’s abandon natural resources as it was stated by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in his recent televised interview. |
