Addis Ababa - Where the Old Fiat Rules
David Muwanga 19 July 2010It is very rare now in Uganda to see an Italian made vehicle traversing the roads unless it is a new model but not those Fiat cars that were mostly used by thieves and smugglers during Idi Amin's regime in the 1970's.

Ethiopia's election: all losers
Author:  René Lefort Summary:  The crushing electoral defeat of the Ethiopian opposition does not actually help the ruling party and encourages its slide into authoritarianism ‘I really feel totally betrayed by the system,’ confessed Beyene Petros, one of the most respected leaders of the Ethiopian opposition, a few days after its crushing defeat in the general elections on 23 May 2010. ‘I thought that, if we competed in the elections, there would be a door ajar that could be made use of by competing parties. This assumption of mine was totally misplaced.’

Steel Vises, Clenched Fists and Closing Walls
Alemayehu G. Mariam   Note: This is the first installment in a series of commentaries I intend to offer on U.S. foreign policy (or lack thereof as some would argue) in Ethiopia.  In this piece, I explore the human rights rhetoric in U.S. foreign policy and argue that lofty talk without action has emboldened Ethiopia’s dictators to ply their usual trade with greater audacity and made the U.S. a silent partner and a deaf-mute witness to their crimes.  I urge the U.S. to back up its big human rights talk with big human rights action in Ethiopia.

Respond to Aiga Forum/Alula Aba-nega’s interview with Ato Ojulu Kwot
By Ojulu Odola   Right after the condemned EPDRF 97% victory over oppositions parties in May 2010 election, EPDRF in Diaspora aired amazing interview with Ato Ojulu Kwot on Alula Aba-nega radio station on Gambela current politics and development and posted on Aiga Forum. Fortunately, Anyuakmedia picked up the audio and re-posted for Anywaa Audience.

Speaking Truth On Behalf of Ethiopian Women
Alemayehu G. Mariam   Note: This is my fifth commentary on the theme "Where do we go from here?" following the rigged May 2010 elections in Ethiopia in which the ruling dictatorship won by 99.6 percent [1]. In this piece, I express deep regrets over the never-ending subjugation of women in Ethiopian society and call for a movement for the advancement of Ethiopian women’s human rights. I urge Ethiopian women to join hands in building the "future country of Ethiopia" that Birtukan Midekssa, Ethiopia's foremost political prisoner and first woman political party leader in Ethiopian history, dreamed about.

Speaking truth on behalf of Ethiopian youth
By Alemayehu G. Mariam June 28, 2010 Note: This is my fourth commentary on the theme, "Where do we go from here?" following the rigged elections in Ethiopia last month in which the ruling dictatorship won by 99.6 percent[1]. In this piece, I express deep anguish over the enormous problems and challenges faced by Ethiopia's youth, and urge them to emancipate their minds and work collectively to build the "future country of Ethiopia" that Birtukan Midekssa, Ethiopia's foremost political prisoner and first woman political party leader in Ethiopian history, dreamed about.

What is learned from the 2010 Ethiopian Election?
By Dr. Magn Nyang For some, the result of 2010 election in Ethiopia was a surprise. For some people, it was not. When those of us who early on saw the fake nature of the 2010 election and called for boycott of so-called election by the opposition groups, we were not believed and further, we were called all kinds of names-- extremists, radicals, and so on by Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) supporters.
